Materials:
RED HEART® Soft Essentials Stripes™: 6 balls 7940 Maritime Stripe
Susan Bates® crochet hook: 4mm [US G-6]
Yarn needle
Gauge/Tension: 13 dc = 4” (10 cm); 6 rows = 4” (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.
Scarf measures 9” (23 cm) wide and 86” (218 cm) long, including fringe.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
Edc (Elongated double crochet): Yarn over and insert hook into the ch-1 space two rows below, yarn over and pull the loop through the ch 1 space up to the row above, yarn over and draw through the first 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and draw through the last two loops on the hook.
SCARF
Ch 33.
Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook, 1 dc in next ch, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch; repeat from * to end of row – 24 dc, 7 ch-1 spaces.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts; repeat from * to last 3 sts, 2 dc, 1 dc in top of ch-3 of previous row.
Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), skip 1, 1 dc in 3rd dc of previous row, 1 edc, 1 dc in the next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc, 1 edc, 1 dc; repeat from * to last 2 sts, ch1, skip 1, 1 dc in top of ch-3 of previous row – 16 dc, 7 edc, 8 ch-1 spaces.
Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), skip ch-1 space, 3 dc, * ch 1, skip ch-1 space, 3 dc; repeat from * to last ch 4 from previous row, ch 1, dc in top of 3rd ch of previous row – 23 dc, 8 ch-1 spaces.
Row 5: Ch 3, 1 edc, 1 dc, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc, 1 edc, 1 dc; repeat from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1, 1 edc, dc in top of 3rd ch of previous row – 16 dc, 8 edc, 8 ch-1 spaces.
Repeat rows 2-5 until piece measures 76” (193 cm).
FINISHING
Fringe
Cut thirty-six 11” (28 cm) lengths of yarn.
Hold 2 strands of yarn together; fold in half to form a loop at the top. Pull loop through the first ch 1 space, then pull ends of fringe through loop. Continue to add fringe in each ch-1 space across the edge for a total of 7 fringe bundles. Add additional fringe bundles to beginning
of row and end of row. Repeat for opposite end of scarf.
Weave in all loose ends.
