Designer Sara Hawkins wrote: I didn’t think that any challenge should be without representation of the Red Hat Ladies so I designed this dishcloth. It was inspired by a motif from a “Chapeau Afghan” that I saw in a magazine with various pastel colored crocheted hat motifs. Since our outings are always “sunny” and cheerful events I made a sunny background for this Red Hat.

Size: About 8” square.
Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn: Shaded Yellows – 1½ oz, 75 yds (45 g, 68 m); Red – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 45 m); Small amount Purple (Peaches & Creme – Daisy Ombre, Lion Brand Cotton Ease – Cherry, Plum)
Crochet Hook: Size H-8 (5.00 mm)
JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.
Special Stitches
Beg Shell: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), (3 dc, hdc) in same st or sp indicated.
Shell: (hdc, 3 dc, hdc) in st or sp indicated.

Hat
Rnd 1: (Right Side) With Red, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc) DO NOT JOIN. MARK BEG OF EACH ROUND.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in next 23 sc, sl st in next sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
Rnd 6: With Purple, ch 25, join with sc to any sc on Rnd 5, sc in next 23 sc, ch 25. Finish off and weave in ends.
Rnd 7: With right side facing, join Red with sl st to first sc of Rnd 6, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), dc in same st, skip next sc, [(dc, ch 2, dc ) in next sc, skip next sc] around; join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc)
Rnd 8: Sl st to ch-2 sp, Beg Shell in same sp, [Shell in next ch-2 sp] around; join with sl st to first hdc. (12 Shells) Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 9: With right side facing, join Yellows with sl st between 5th and 6th Shells, ch 6 (counts as first dc and ch 3), dc in same st, [ch 4, hdc in next sp between Shells] twice, ch 4, * (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sp, [ch 4, hdc in next sp between Shells] twice, ch 4; rep from * around; join with sl st to first dc. (8 dc, 8 hdc)
Rnd 10: Sl st to ch-3 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, [4 dc in next ch-4 sp] 3 times, * (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, [4 dc in next ch-4 sp] 3 times; rep from * around; join. (72 dc)
Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, dc in next 18 dc] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, dc in next 15 dc; join. (96 dc)
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next 5 dc, [3 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 24 dc] 3 times, 3 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 18 dc; join with sl st to first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
