Red Heart® “Shimmer”: 2 balls 1929 RedCrochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]Stitch marker, yarn needle.
Circumference at bottom edge above border: 35” Circumference at top edge below border: 24”
GAUGE: 14 sts = 4”; 13 rounds = 4” in pattern stitch (see below). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special Stitches

fsc (foundation single crochet) = Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd chain from hook and draw up a loop (ch stitch made) * yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (sc made), insert hook in ch stitch and draw up a loop; repeat from * for as many fsc as called for in pattern.

sc2tog = [draw up a loop in next sc] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE: Bottom border is worked back and forth first, then stitches are picked up from the foundation and worked in the round to the neck.

Pattern Stitch (worked in the round on a multiple of 2 sts)

To make gauge swatch, ch 22, join with slip st to first ch.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in first ch, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * around—12 sc.

Rounds 2-13: Sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip ch-1 space, sc in next sc; repeat from * around. Piece should measure 6¼” around and 4” tall.

COWL

Leaving a long tail for seaming, fsc 127; turn.

Row 1 (right side): Ch 1, dc in first fsc, *ch 1, skip 1 fsc, dc in next fsc; repeat from * across; turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *sc in next ch-space, ch 4, skip next 2 chain spaces, [2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] in next chain space, ch 4, skip next 2 ch-spaces, sc in next ch-space and in next dc; repeat from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in next sc, *sc in ch-4 space, *ch 3, skip 2 dc, [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc] in ch-3 space, ch 3, sc in next ch-4 space, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * across, omitting last sc; turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, *ch 4, skip [sc, ch 3, 3 dc], [dc, (ch 1, dc) 6 times] in ch-4 space, ch 4, skip [3 dc, ch 3, sc], sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * across, omitting last sc; turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 4, skip [ch-4 space, 1 dc] [sc, ch 2] in each of next 5 ch-1 spaces, sc in next ch-1 space, ch 4, skip [1 dc, ch-4 space, 1 sc], sc in next sc; repeat from * across. Fasten off.

With right side facing and holding border so that the fsc row is on top, rejoin yarn in third chain space of the foundation row.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first fsc, ch 1, *skip 1 fsc, sc in next fsc, ch 1; repeat from * across, leaving last 2 fsc unworked—62 sc. Being careful not to twist, join in the round with a slip stitch to first sc. Place marker to designate first stitch.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip ch-1 space, sc in next sc; repeat from * around. Move marker up as you work in same sc. Repeat Round 1 for 38 more rounds.

Decrease Rounds

Round 40: Sc in first sc, ch 1, sc in next sc, *ch 1, sc2tog, [ch 1, sc in next sc] 3 times; repeat from * around—50 sc.

Round 41: Work even.

Round 42: Sc in first sc of round, ch 1, sc in next sc, *ch 1, sc2tog, [ch 1, sc in next sc] 4 times; repeat from * around—42 sc.

Edging

Round 43: Ch 1, sc in marked sc, *skip 2 ch-spaces, ch 2, [dc, (ch 1, dc) 6 times] in next ch-space, ch 2, skip next 2 ch-spaces, sc in next ch-space, sc in next sc and in next ch-space; repeat from * around.

Round 44: *Ch 2, [sc, ch 2] in each of the next 6 ch-1 spaces of shell, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around, ending with slip stitch in center sc. Fasten off. Sew seam. Weave in ends.
