Here’s a wonderful crocheted turtle for your favorite kid to hug and love. It’s stuffed with a standard size pillow so it’s perfect for naptime or keeping a child company when visiting relatives.
Gauge/Tension: GAUGE: 10 sts = 4″; 11 rows = 4″ in sc with smaller hook and double strand of yarn. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Pillow measures 20” wide x 21½” high.
Note: Pillow insert used is a soft standard size pillow. Due to differences in pillow stuffing and size, check cover for fit before finishing off.

Head
With smaller hook and double strand of A; ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join but work in continuous rounds. Mark last st of round and move marker up each round.
Round 1: 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Round 2: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times – 18 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times – 24 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc] 6 times – 30 sc.
Round 5: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times – 36 sc.
Round 6: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc] 6 times – 42 sc.
Round 7: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc] 6 times – 48 sc.
Rounds 8-19: Sc in each sc around.

Shell
With larger hook and triple strand of B, ch 4; join with a slip st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc throughout), 11 hdc in ring; join with a slip st in top of ch-2 – 12 sts.
Round 2: Ch 2, 3 hdc in next hdc, [hdc in next hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc] 5 times; join – 24 sts.
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in next hdc and in each hdc around; join.
Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in next hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc, [hdc in next 3 hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc] 5 times, hdc in last hdc; join – 36 sts.
Round 5: Ch 2, hdc in next 2 hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc, [hdc in next 5 hdc, 3 hdc in next hdc] 5 times, hdc in last 2 hdc; join – 48 sts.

Pillow Cover
With smaller hook and double strand of A, ch 74; join with a slip st in first ch being careful that ch is not twisted.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; do not join – 74 sc. Work in continuous rounds as for Head.
Rounds 2-50: Sc in each sc around. Fasten off leaving long tail for closing seam.
Closing Strap
With smaller hook and double strand of A, ch 8.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 7 sc.
Rows 2-30: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Fasten off leaving long tail for attaching to pillow cover.
Finishing
Using a long needle and thick thread, create eyes by sewing the buttons onto the face as pictured. Weave and trim ends.
Sew end seam of pillow cover closed, using yarn tail. Insert pillow and close opposite seam in same fashion.
Center shell on turtle body. Attach by sewing using yarn, making seams 1” from the edge of the shell to form shell edge.
Working along the short sides of the rectangular pillow, locate the midpoint. Pin the closing strap at this midpoint and attach securely by sewing using yarn tail. On the opposite side sew a 2” wide piece of loop side of the Velcro to the pillow cover using matching sewing thread and a sharp needle. Sew hook part of the Velcro along the end of the strap.
Working along the longer side of the rectangular pillow, locate the midpoint of the pillow and attach the head securely with yarn and a tapestry needle.
