Freshen things up with this geometric pillow. We love the pop of color it adds, but it would be just as pretty in other colorways too!
Materials:
RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each Charcoal 3950 A, Turqua 512 B, Flamingo 259 C, Spring Green 672 D, and Aran 313 E
Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 6mm [US J-10]
Yarn needle
Three 1¼” (32 mm) buttons, 12 x 16” (30 x 41 cm) pillow form
Gauge/Tension: 11 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 9 rows = 4” [10 cm]. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.
Pillow case fits pillow form sized: 12” x 16” (30 x 41 cm)
Special Abbreviations
Hdc inc: Work 2 hdc in same st – 1 st increased.
Hdc dec: Work 1 hdc over two sts – 1 st decreased.
PILLOW
Diamond Motif (make 4)
With A, make a slip knot, leaving a 16” (40.5 cm) tail for seaming. Ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, turn.
Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as st here and throughout), hdc inc in first st, turn – 2 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc inc in each st across, turn – 4 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, hdc to last st, hdc inc in last st, turn – 2 hdc, 4 sc.
Rows 4–12: Repeat Row 3.
Fasten off A. Attach B to last worked hdc.
Row 13: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn – 22 hdc.
Row 14: Ch 2, hdc dec, hdc to last two sts, hdc dec, ch 2, turn – 20 hdc.
Rows 15-22: Repeat Row 13.
Row 23: Ch 2, [hdc dec] twice, turn – 2 hdc.
Row 24: Ch 2, hdc dc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.
Make 3 more diamond motifs using the following color combinations:
Motif 2: D and E
Motif 3: B and E
Motif 4: C and A
Single Triangle (make 6)
With C, make a slip knot, leaving a 16” (40.5 cm) tail for seaming.
Ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, turn.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, turn – 2 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc inc in each st across, turn – 4 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, hdc to last st, hdc inc in last st, turn.
Rows 4–12: Repeat Row 3.
Fasten off.
Make 5 more single triangles in the following colors: 1 A, 1 B, 1 C, 2 D.
Half Triangles (make 4)
With B, make a slip knot, leaving a 16” (40.5 cm) tail for seaming.
Ch 3, hdc in third ch from hook, turn.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, turn – 2 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, hdc, turn – 3 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc to last st, hdc inc in last st, turn – 4 hdc.
Row 4: Ch 2, hdc inc in first st, hdc to end of row, turn – 5 hdc.
Rows 5-12: Repeat Rows 3 and 4.
Fasten off.
Make 3 more Half Triangles, one each in the following colors: A, D, and E.
ASSEMBLY
Seam the motifs together using the long tails and the diagram below.
Weave in any loose ends, securing any gaps left from seaming where the motifs meet. Your rectangle should now measure 34” (86 cm) long and 11” (28 cm) tall.
FINISHING
Edging
Round 1: With right side facing, join E in any corner; ch 2, *3 hdc in corner, hdc in each st along the edge until you reach
the next Small Triangle, hdc in gap between triangles, hdc in each st along the edge to next corner; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first hdc.
Fasten off.
Round 2: Join A to center of any 3-hdc corner, ch 2, *3 hdc in center of 3-hdc group, hdc in the third loop (the loop found just below the back loop of the st) of each st around; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first hdc.
Fasten off.
Round 3: Fold pillow case in half with wrong sides together, lining up triangles.
Join D to either top corner, ch 1, sc across, catching both loops from both sides at once to seam the two sides together to corner, sc the first st of the 3-hdc group.
Fasten off.
Note: If you want to omit the button flap, place pillow form in case, and sc to join around entire pillow with D, seaming the pillow inside.
Repeat Round 3 on the opposite side, seaming up the edge with a row of sc.
Flap
Attach E in last st joined by Round 3 from Edging.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc across to the last st joined by Round 3 at the end of the row, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until the flap measures roughly 3” (8 cm).
Buttonholes
Tack or pin buttons to your case right below the flap, arranging them evenly across the edge; * hdc in each st to next button, ch 4; repeat from * across row.
Fasten off.
Sew buttons to pillow case. Weave in ends and block if desired.
