  • Susan Bates® Steel Crochet Hook: 1.60mm [US 6

Additional Supplies Needed:

rustproof pins, spray starch (for stiffening)

GAUGE: Rounds 1-3 = 2″ (5 cm); 1 motif = 6″ (15 cm), blocked and stiffened. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Runner measures 45” x 13½” (114.5 x 34.5 cm)

Special Stitches

beg dc4tog = Ch 2, [yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 3 times, yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook.

dc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next ch-3 space, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

dc4tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 4 times, yarn over, draw through all 5 loops on hook.

dtr (double treble crochet) = [Yarn over] 3 times, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times.

V-st = (dc, ch 3, dc) in indicated stitch or space.

V-st-join = (dc, ch 1, slip st in corresponding V-st of neighboring motif, ch 1, dc).

Notes

1. Runner is made from 25 motifs, arranged into 3 rows of 8, 9, and 8 motifs each.

2. Each motif is worked in joined rounds with right side facing at all times.

3. Motifs are joined to neighboring motifs using a “join-as-you-go” technique as the last round is worked. Hold the motifs with wrong sides together and stitches matching.

4. Make and join motifs to neighboring motifs according to Assembly Diagram and instructions.

5. Motifs’ cupping will flatten when blocked. For best results, block every 3 motifs as you work.

RUNNER

Motif #1

Ch 5; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (right side): [Ch 10, slip st in ring] 5 times, ch 5, dtr in base of beginning ch-10—6 ch-10 spaces (ch 5 and dtr count as last ch- 10 space).

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout) (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in first ch-10 space, [ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-10 space] 5 times, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3—36 dc and 6 ch-3 spaces.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 space, ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, [ch 2, dc in next 3 dc, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 space, ch 3, dc in next 3 dc] 5 times, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3—36 dc, 6 sc, and 12 ch-3 spaces.

Note: Dc2tog is worked over 2 ch-3 spaces (see Special Stitches).

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Wet block, pinning and stretching fully, if necessary, to open pattern. Starch lightly with spray starch and allow to dry thoroughly.
