Tall Keeper is 10” tall. Short Keeper is 5” tall.
Skill Level: Easy
RED HEART® “Super Saver®”: 1 ball 301 Mirage for Tall Keeper; 1 ball each 334 Buff A and 301 Mirage B for Short Keeper.
Crochet Hook: 5 mm [US H-8]. Yarn needle, stitch marker, 2-3 oatmeal containers, glue.
GAUGE: 25 sc = 8”; 16 rows = 4”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Notes: Keepers are knitted in a spiral fashion in continuous rounds. Mark beginning of round. To change colors, work last step of previous st with new color. To prevent colors pooling on variegated yarn, divide yarn into 2 balls. Alternate working with each ball every round, carrying ball not in use loosely along wrong side of work.
Special Abbreviations
sc2tog = [draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
TALL KEEPER
Bottom Piece
Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook – 6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 6 times – 18 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 6 times – 24 sc.
Round 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 6 times – 30 sc.
Round 6: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts] 6 times – 36 sc.
Round 7: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts] 6 times – 42 sc.
Round 8: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts] 6 times – 48 sc.
Round 9: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts] 6 times – 54 sc.
Round 10: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts] 6 times – 60 sc, slip in first sc to join.
Sides
Round 11: Working in back loops only, sc in each st around, slip st in first st to join – 60 sc.
Rounds 12-13: Working in continuous rounds, sc in each sc around – 60 sc.
Round 14: [Sc2tog, sc in next 8 sts] 6 times – 54 sc Repeat Round 12 on 54 sc until Sides measure 9½” from Round 11.
Top Edging
Working in back loops only, slip st in each st around for 3 rounds. Fasten off.
Lid
Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st in first sc to join – 6 sc.
Round 2: Working in back loops only, sc in each st around, slip st in first st to join – 6 sc. Work in continuous rounds until Stem measures 2” from beginning. Repeat Rounds 2-13 as for Bottom Piece – 60 sc. Repeat Round 12 on 60 sc until piece measures ½” from Round 11. Repeat Top Edging as for Bottom Piece. Fasten off.
SHORT KEEPER
With A, work Rounds 1-14 of Bottom Piece same as for Tall Keeper. Repeating Round 12, work stripes with 2 rounds of B as desired until Sides measures 4½” from Round 11. Work Top Edging as for Tall Keeper with A. Work Lid as for Tall Keeper with A, adding 2 rounds of B for stripe.
FINISHING
Weave in ends. Slide empty cardboard oatmeal container inside, trimming excess as is necessary. Glue in place.
