Hairpin lace is created by using a crochet hook and a hairpin lace loom. Hairpin lace looms consist of two parallel rods held at the top and bottom by removable bars. Some looms are one size only and others offer adjustable widths which typically vary from 1” to several inches wide.
Hairpin lace is formed by wrapping yarn around the prongs of the hairpin lace loom and crocheting a stitch in the center of the loom to hold the loops together. The row of stitches in the middle creates what is called the spine. Hairpin lace can be worked to any length by removing the bottom bar of the hairpin loom and slipping the loops off the end. The strips created can be joined together to make lacy and delicate fabrics. Various types of yarns and threads can be used to create doilies, scarves, shawls, hats, baby blankets, afghans, and clothing.
This beautiful Hairpin Lace Afghan is crochet lengthwise from side to side alternating rows of popcorns and hairpin lace strips. Create this unique afghan with worsted weight yarn and medium size crochet hooks.
