#33 Carnation Crochet Dishcloth

Similar to a birthstone and an astrological sign, there are birth flowers which have a corresponding meaning and character that is being attributed to the person who was born during a certain month.  The January birth flower is the carnation. The name of the flower is derived from the Greek word corone (coronation) and means ‘flower of the Gods’.

Flower Meaning of Carnation: Carnations symbolize deep love, fascination, a friend in adversity and eternal fidelity.

Personality traits associated with carnation: Individuals who have carnation as their birth flower are strongly motivated to succeed and gain a position of power in life. They strive for respect and accomplishment in their careers. They are emotional and sensitive and are very responsible and protective towards their families. But the biggest barrier in their success is their communication skills; they need to learn to openly communicate their deep feelings.

I followed the beginning directions, exactly, to the beginning of this potholder. After doing the flower, it looks nothing like the flower in the picture. I have been crocheting for over forty years, so I am not new to crochet.
When I finished the instructions for the flower, my flower petals are flat. Are the directions for the flower correct for this potholder? If so, why wouldn’t the flower I crocheted look like the results in the picture? I just wondered.
    Thanks.

Mine worked out just the same as the photo… it’s a beautiful dishcloth. I’m not sure how the flower would be flat.. I wish I was near you to see yours.. I KNOW we would figure it out!

I had trouble seeing the carnation able to come out… but I read the directions again and now I see.. I missed the ruffle is started from front looks of round one and two… Journeyhawk? maybe you missed it too?? mine came out fine after I re-read the directions… I thought the ruffle was “around” the entire washcloth but it is not… the ruffle is the carnation… thanks for a great pattern!
