Shawl measures 18” x 72” (18” x 54)”.
GAUGE: Motif = 6” wide. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook needed to obtain the gauge given.Special Abbreviations

V-st: (dc, ch 2, dc) in same space or stitch

2-ch shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space.

3-ch shell: (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space.

Special Technique

Adjustable Loop: With long side of yarn in the palm of your hand, wrap yarn around finger. Insert hook under the wrap, grab yarn and pull through; ch 1, release circle around finger gently, work the sts asked of you, pull tail gently to tighten the ring.

SHAWL

First Strip

Main Motif 1

Make an Adjustable Loop.

Round 1: Work 8 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), V-st in each sc around; join with a slip st in first dc—8 V-sts

Round 3: Slip st in ch-2 space of first V-st, ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, ch 1, *2-ch shell in next ch 2 space, ch 1; repeat from around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-2—eight 2-ch shells.

Round 4: Slip st in ch-2 space of first V-st, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, *3-ch shell in ch-2 space of next shell, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-2—eight 3-ch shells.

Round 5: Slip st in ch-2 space of first V-st, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2, *3-ch shell in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-2— eight 3-ch shells.

Fasten off leaving a tail long enough for weaving.

Main Motif 2 (joining on one side)

Work same as Main Motif 1 through Round 4.

Round 5: Slip st in ch-2 space of first V-st, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2, *3-ch shell in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2; repeat from * 4 times, [2 dc in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 1, slip st in ch-3 space of previous motif, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-3 space on current motif, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2] twice, join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-2. Fasten off.

Main Motifs 3-12 (3-9)

Make and join 10 (7) more Main Motifs, joining to opposite side of previous Motif, same as Main Motif 2.

Second Strip

Motif 13 (10)

Work same as Main Motif 2, joining to 2 ch-3 spaces on side of Motif 1.

Motifs 14-24 (11-18) (joining on two sides)

Work same as Main Motif 1 through Round 4.

Round 5: Slip st in ch-2 space of first V-st, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2, *3-ch shell in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2; repeat from * twice, [2 dc in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 1, slip st in ch-3 space of previous motif, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-3 space on current motif, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2] twice, [2 dc in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 1, slip st in ch-3 space of adjacent motif on previous strip, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-3 space on current motif, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2] twice, join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-2. Fasten off.

Third Strip

Motifs 26-36 (19-27)

Work same as Second Strip, joining each motif to previous motif and to motifs on Second Strip.

Fill In Motifs (make and join 26 [20] in openings  between 4 motifs)

Make a Magic Ring/Adjustable Loop.

Round 1: Work 8 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc.

Round 2: Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3), slip st in sc between 2 shells on any Main Motif, ch 3, dc in same sc on current motif, *dc in next sc, ch 3, slip st in junction between 2 Main Motifs, ch 3, dc in same dc**, dc in next sc, ch 3, slip st in next sc between 2 Main Motifs, ch 3, dc in same dc on current motif; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **; join with a slip st in first dc.

Edging Motifs (make and join 22 [16] in spaces  between Main Motifs on sides of shawl)

Make a Magic Ring/Adjustable Loop.

Round 1: Work 5 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc—5 sc.

Round 2: Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3), slip st in ch-3 space of first shell to the right of junction on any Main Motif on side edge, ch 3, dc in same sc on current motif, *dc in next sc, ch 3, slip st in next sc on Main Motif, ch 3, dc in same sc on current motif*, dc in next sc, ch 3, slip st in junction between 2 Main Motifs, ch 3, dc in same dc on current motif; repeat from * to * once, dc in next sc, ch 3, slip st in ch-3 space of next shell, ch 3, dc in same sc on current motif. Fasten off.

FRINGE

Cut 14” lengths of yarn and using 8 lengths for each fringe, attach 22 fringes evenly spaced across each short edge of shawl.
