Additional Supplies Needed:
Two 16” (40.5 cm) square pillow forms, 2 hanks black and 1 hank pink 6-strand embroidery floss, white carpet thread (optional for mouse whiskers)
GAUGE: 7 sts = 2” (5 cm); 8 rows = 2” (5 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Each pillow measures 16” x 16” (40.5 x 40.5 cm).
Special Stitch
hdc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.
sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Special Technique
Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
Notes
1. Nine kitten and nine puppy motifs are made separately in squares and sewn together for fronts of pillows. J is the background color of all squares and remaining colors are each worked once (“first color”).
2. Cat applique is made separately and sewn to back of puppies pillow. Mouse applique is made separately and sewn to back of kittens pillow.
3. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Drop old color but do not cut until instructed. Proceed with new color.
4. Use photograph as a guide for embroidery and placement of sewn-on pieces.

Front Side Square (make 9 – 1 each in A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I)
With first color, ch 20.
Row 1 (wrong side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—19 sc.
Rows 2–13: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first 8 sc; change to J, sc in last 11 sc, turn.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in first 11 sc; change to first color, sc in last 8 sc, turn.
Rows 16 and 17: Repeat Rows 14 and 15.
Row 18: Repeat Row 14.
Row 19: Ch 1, sc in first 11 sc; change to first color, sc next 3 sc; change to J, sc in next 2 sc; change to first color, sc in last 3 sc, turn

Mouse
With A, ch 27.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 9 ch; leave remaining ch unworked for tail, turn—11 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first st), dc in next 6 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, slip st in first st, sc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog—9 sts. Fasten off.
Ear (make 2)
With A, ch 3.
Round 1 (right side): Work 6 hdc in 3rd ch from hook; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—6 hdc. Fasten off.
FINISHING FOR KITTENS PILLOW
Faces
Thread embroidery floss onto needle and fold over to double the strands. With all 12 strands held together, embroider French knot eyes and nose. Sew one vertical straight stitch from nose and 2 stitches as an inverted “V” for mouth.
Mouse
With floss, embroider French knot eye and satin stitch nose. Place mouse on back side. Tuck one ear between head and back side and place other ear slightly on top of head. Sew body and ears in place leaving top of ears and tail unsewn. Add strands of carpet thread as whiskers, if desired. Weave in ends.
Using assembly diagram as a guide and with right sides facing, sew squares together with ending tails for front side. Pull tails to wrong side of piece to minimize weaving in.
Joining Round: With wrong sides held together and working through both thicknesses, join J with sc in first st of top row, 2 sc in same st, sc in each st across to last st, 3 sc in last st; working across ends of rows, sc in each row to bottom row; working in opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; insert pillow form; working across ends of rows, sc in each row to top row; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
PUPPIES FOR SALE PILLOW
Front Side Square (make 9 – 1 each in A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I )
Rows 1–13: Work same as Rows 1–13 of squares of kittens pillow.
Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first 10 sc; change to J, sc in last 9 sc, turn.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in next 9 sc; change to first color, sc in last 10 sc, turn.
Rows 16–19: Repeat Rows 14 and 15 twice; change to J in last st of Row 19, turn.
Row 20: Ch 1, sc in first sc; change to first color, sc in next 8 sc; change to J, sc in last 10 sc, turn.
Row 21: Ch 1, sc in first 11 sc; change to first color, sc in next 6 sc; change to J, sc in last 2 sc. Fasten off J. Cut first color, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Ear (make 18 – 2 each in A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I)
Ch 4.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, 5 hdc in last ch; working in opposite side of foundation ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch—9 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

With A, ch 8.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—7 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc, turn—9 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc, turn—11 sc.
Rows 4–6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Rows 7–9: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—5 sc.

Faces
Embroider faces same as kittens pillow. With pink floss, embroider satin stitches vertically for tongue. Sew matching ears on Row 20 at 2nd and 9th stitches from edge.
Cat
Embroider eyes and nose same as kitten’s face. Embroider smile with back stitches. Sew cat and tail on back of pillow.
Pillow
Follow assembly and joining directions same as kitten pillow.
