  • RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each 624 Tea Leaf A, 315 Artist Print B, 579 Pale Plum C, 316 Soft White D, 656 Real Teal E, 312 Black F, 256 Carrot G
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hooks: 3.75mm [F-5 US] and 5.5mm [I-9 US]
  • Yarn needle

16″ (40.5 cm) pillow form

Whether used on the sofa or in the bedroom, this adorable owl adds a touch of color and playfulness to your style. Crochet him in the colors shown, or change them up to suit your décor.

Gauge/Tension:     GAUGE: 12 dc = 4″ (10 cm) in pattern; 6 rows = 4″ (10 cm), with larger hook.

CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special Stitches

picot = ch 3, slip st in 3rd ch from hook.

sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

sc3tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] three times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Notes

1. Pillow cover is made from two squares joined together with border round.

2. Owl is worked in sections which are sewn to front of pillow before pillow form is enclosed.

3. All pieces are worked with larger hook except edging around eyes.

PILLOW (make 2)

With A, ch 49.

Row 1 (right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch count as first dc) and in each ch across, turn—47 dc.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), *dc in front loop of next dc, dc in back loop of next dc; repeat from * to last 2 sts, dc in front loop of next dc, dc in top of beginning ch, turn.

Rows 3–23: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off.

Edging Note: Skip a stitch as needed to work an odd number of stitches on each side between 3-sc groups in each corner.

Round 1: With right side facing and G, join with sc in first corner dc, 2 sc in same st as join, sc in each st to next corner dc, 3 sc in corner dc; sc evenly spaced across ends of rows of first side; working across oppositeside of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch, sc in each ch to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; sc evenly spaced across ends of rows of other side; join with slip st to first sc; join with slip st to first sc. Do not turn.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 3 sc in next sc; sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in center sc of each corner 3-sc group; join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

OWL

Note When fastening off, leave long tails on each piece for sewing.

Body

Beginning at top of head, with B, ch 10.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—9 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn—11 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Rows 4–9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 three times—17 sc.

Rows 10 and 11: Repeat Row 3.

Rows 12–14: Repeat Row 2—23 sc.

Rows 15–28: Repeat Row 3.

Row 29: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—21 sc.

Rows 30 and 31: Repeat Row 3.

Rows 32–37: Repeat Row 29—9 sc.

Fasten off.

Ears (make 2)

With B, ch 6.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—5 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog, turn—3 sc.

Rows 4 and 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Belly

With C, ch 8.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—7 sc.

Rows 2–5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn—15 sc.

Rows 6–13: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Rows 14–17: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—7 sc.

Row 18: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn. Fasten off.

Eyes (make 2)

With D, ch 6.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—5 sc.

Rows 2–5: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Fasten off.

With smaller hook, join E with sc in any sc.

Edging: Sc in each sc and in end of each row around; join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

Eye Pupil (make 2)

With F, ch 3.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and last ch, turn—2 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn. Fasten off.

Wing (make 2)

With E, ch 2.

Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn—2 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, turn—3 sc.

Rows 3–7: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in remaining sc, turn—8 sc.

Rows 8–12: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in remaining sc, turn—3 sc.

Fasten off.

Beak

With G, ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—4 sc.

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.

Fasten off.

Feet (make 2)

With G, ch 3.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and last ch, turn—2 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc, turn—4 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn—6 sc.

Rows 4 and 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 3, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, skip next 2 sc, slip st in next sc, ch 3, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, skip next sc, slip st in next sc, ch 3, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, slip st in last sc. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

Use photograph as a guide to all placement.

Sew ears to top of head and belly to body. Fold one edge of each eye under slightly and place eyes with these straight edges together on head; sew in place. Sew pupils on each eye close to center of face with points positioned vertically (like a diamond shape). With points placed vertically, sew beak between eyes.

Center owl body on one pillow square and sew with running stitches. Sew wings and feet to body and pillow.

FINISHING

Edging: With wrong sides together, larger hook, and working through both thicknesses, join E with sc in any center sc of 3-sc group, picot, sc in same sc as join, [*picot, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * to center sc of next 3-sc group, (sc, picot, sc) in center sc] 3 times, insert pillow form, **picot, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from ** to first sc; join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
