Designer Kathleen Stuart wrote: ” So, what do you do with those left over skeins of yarn? Striped patterns! I was playing around with stitches when I came up with this pattern. Using a basic idea of double crochet decrease stitch worked over 3 stitches, leaving a space in between and starting the next stitch where the last ended – this pattern stitch reminds me of zigzags (or ric rac). ”

Zig Zag Dishcloth

Skill: Easy
Size: About 8” square.
Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn: Blue – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 46 m) Orange – ½ oz, 25 yds, (15 g, 23 m) Green – ½ oz, 25 yds, (15 g, 23 m) (Lily Sugar ‘n Cream – Hot Blue, Hot Orange, Mod Green)
Crochet Hook: Size J-8 (5.00 mm)
To Change Colors
Work last stitch before color change to last step, with new color, yo and pull new color through remaining lps on hook. Drop unused color to wrong side. Do not work over unused color.
JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.
Pattern Stitches
beg zig zag st : Yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook; skip next st, yo, insert hook in next st or sp, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook, yo, draw through remaining 3 loops.
zig zag st: Yo, insert hook in same st (or sp) as last st worked, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook; skip next st, yo, insert hook in next st or sp, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook, yo, draw through remaining 3 loops.
Stripe Sequence : [1 row Blue, 1 row Orange, 1 row Green] 3 times, last row in Blue.
DISHCLOTH
Row 1: (Right Side) With Blue, ch 35, beg zig zag in 6th ch from hook, [ch 1, zig zag st] across, ending with ch 1, dc in last ch; change to Orange. (14 zig zags)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), turn, working in ch-1 sps, beg zig zag st (starting in first ch-1 sp), [ch 1, zig zag st] across, ending with ch 1, dc in last dc, change color to next color in sequence.
Rows 3-13: Rep Row 2 following Stripe Sequence.
At the end of Row 13, DO NOT FINISH OFF.
Border
Rnd 1: With right side facing, ch 1, 3 sc in last dc worked (corner), sc evenly around each side of dishcloth, working 3 sc in each corner st;join with sl st to first sc.Finish off and weave in ends.
