Free Crochet Pattern – Striped hat #2

Skill: Beginner

Size: To fit child: Finished Hat measures 15” around and 8” tall.

Materials: : Yarn Needle; Worsted Weight Yarn; Blue (MC) – 1 ½ oz, 83 yd (42 g, 75 m); White (CC) – 2 oz, 110 yd (56 g, 99 m); 4” square of Cardboard (for Pom-Pom).

Crochet Hook: Size H-8 (5.00 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

To Change Colors

Work last stitch before color change to last step, with new color yo and pull new color through remaining loops on hook. Drop unused color to wrong side. Do not work over unused color.

 

Pattern

Row 1: With W, ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (29 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back lps only, sc in each sc across. (29 sc) Drop W and change to B.

Rows 3-4: With B, ch 1, turn, working in back lps only, sc in each sc across. Drop B and change to W.

Rows 5-6: With W, ch 1, turn, working in back lps only, sc in each sc across. Drop W and change to B.

Rows 7-46: Rep Rows 3-6 ten times.

At the end of Row 46, finish off leaving long end.

 

Pom-Pom

Cut Cardboard 4” square. Wrap Yarn around square several times (see Fig. 1). Slip yarn off square and firmly tie a 12” piece around middle (see Fig. 2). Leave the tie ends long to attach the pom-pom. Cut loops at each end and trim to a smooth ball.

Finishing

– Using long end and Yarn Needle, with wrong side facing, sew Row 46 to Row 1 to make a Tube.

– With right side facing, using Yarn Needle and Yarn, work a running stitch along sides of rows of one edge of Tube (top of Hat). Pull Yarn snugly to gather. Secure Yarn.

– Using long end of Pom-Pom and Yarn Needle, sew Pom-Pom to top of Hat.

– Weave in all ends.

–  With right side facing, turn bottom edge of Hat up about 7 sts.

    Hello and thank you for the hat pattern. My grandmother used to make these for us when we were young. I am so excited to finally find a pattern. I am pretty much a beginner, but I would like to learn how to make the pattern larger. A new goal for the new year!!
