To celebrate the first day of winter we are featuring three free afghan patterns today. The first day of the winter season in the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest south (on December 21st or 22nd). This day is known as the Winter Solstice.
Handmade afghans keep a lot of our loved ones warm during the winter season. They warm their bodies and hearts when they reflect on your labor of love.
Cuddle up with a warm cup of hot chocolate, your favorite yarn and hook and enjoy your winter days relaxing with your peaceful crochet hobby.

I HAD A CROCHET PATERN LIKE THIS AND I LOST IT SO THIS WILL COME IN HANDY WHEN I FIND TIME TO START THIS ONE. THANKS FOR GIVING ME YOUR WEB SITE.
EVA OF OWOSSO MICH.
Thank you very much dear Maggie. I am so happy to found you on line. I am new here – as I live a bit further on the map. Only in England. Thank you for sharing all your patterns. Kind regards and best wishes.
I believe this is almost like the one a dear friend taught me – I wanted to learn from her and now that she’s in her 91st year, she is proud of my accomplishments of making over a dozen of ‘her’ afghan.
The edges are different. She added 8 extra sts to chain so that at each edge there are 4 sts befor and after the main directions.
1st Edge:
sc for 3 sts, skip next (then proceed with ripple design) At end of row, skip one space, sc for 3 sts.
The side stitches are done with hood under both sides of loop; while the main part of ripple design is back loop only.
Makes a very nice finished edge. Hope I wrote this for ease of understanding.
Typos – befor – should be ‘before’ and hood – should be ‘hook’. Sorry.
Maybe Maggie can edit my post to avoid second post.
Might as well say that whether with solid color for entire afghan of with different colors along the way, I always crochet unused yarn in with new yarn and continue.
All I have left to weave in are the little beginning and end snips.
