Shells & Filet Dishcloth

Skill: Easy

Size:
About 9” square.

Materials:
Worsted Weight Cotton: Pink – 1½ oz, 75 yd (45 g, 69 m); Blue – ½ oz, 25 yd (15 g, 23 m); Variegated – ½ oz, 25 yd (15 g, 23 m)(Sugar ‘n Cream -Mod Pink, Cornflower, Westport)

Crochet Hook:
Size H-8 (5.00 mm)

To Change Colors

Work last stitch before color change to last step, with new color, yo and pull new color through remaining lps on hook. Drop unused color to wrong side. Do not work over unused color.

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

Special Stitches

Shell:
5 dc in same st or sp indicated.

DISHCLOTH

Row 1: (Right Side) With Pink, ch 18, sc in 2nd ch from hook, [sc in next ch] across. (17 sc) Change color to Variegated.

Row 2:
With Variegated, ch 3, turn, skip next 2 sc, shell in next sc, [skip next 4 sc, shell in next sc] twice, skip next 2 sc, dc in last sc. (3 shells and 2 dc) Change color to Blue.

Row 3:
With Blue, ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, [working over last row, shell between 2nd and 3rd skipped sc on Row 1] twice, 3 dc in last dc. (2 shells and 2 half-shells) Pick up Pink.

Row 4:
With Pink, ch 3, turn, skip next 2 sc, shell in next sc, [skip next 4 sc, shell in next sc] twice, skip next 2 sc, dc in last sc. (3 shells and 2 dc) Pick up Variegated.

Row 5:
With Variegated, ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, [working over last row, shell between 2nd and 3rd skipped sc on Row 1] twice, 3 dc in last dc. (2 shells and 2 half-shells) Pick up Blue.

Row 6:
With Blue, ch 3, turn, skip next 2 sc, shell in next sc, [skip next 4 sc, shell in next sc] twice, skip next 2 sc, dc in last sc. (3 shells and 2 dc) Pick up Pink.

Row 7:
With Pink, ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, [working over last row, shell between 2nd and 3rd skipped sc on Row 1] twice, 3 dc in last dc. (2 shells and 2 half-shells) Pick up Variegated.

Rows 8-12:
Rep Rows 2-6 once.

Row 13:
With Pink, ch 1, turn, sc in each dc across. (17 sc) DO NOT FINISH OFF.

Border

Rnd 1:
Ch 3, DO NOT TURN (right side facing), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in last sc worked; * working in sides of Rows, [2 dc in next row, dc in next row] 5 times, 2 dc in next row *; working in unused lps of starting ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first ch, dc in next 15 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in last ch; rep from * to * once; working in Row 13, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first sc, dc in next 15 sc; join with sl st to first dc.

Rnd 2:
Sl st in next dc, sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2, now and throughout), dc in same sp, * ch 1, dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc] across to next corner, ch 1, ** (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * 3 times, ending at ** on final repeat; join.

Rnd 3:
Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, 2 dc in same sp, * dc in next dc, [dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc] across to next corner sp **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending at ** on final repeat, dc in first ch-2 sp; join. Finish off and weave in ends.

    Love the concept of this Dishcloth Challenge, but because I am so inexperienced, the instructions starting in Row 3 have me confused. Work over last row? Can someone explain how I should do this? Thank you.
